What is Dengue and What is its treatment?

Dengue is a name given to fever, particularly a viral fever, caused by a group of viruses. These viruses are transmitted to humans by infected Aedes mosquitoes.

There are 4 different types of dengue viruses, they are Dengue 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each virus has the capability of causing dengue fever and making ill. This also means that a person can be affected by dengue as many as 4 times in his whole life. Later that person becomes resistant to them.

These Aedes mosquitoes also spread Zika, Chikungunya, and other types of viruses. 40 percent (40 %) of the world's population lives in areas with a risk of Dengue. It is more common in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.

Each year, up to 400 million people get infected with dengue. Approximately 100 million people get sick from infection, and 22,000 die from severe dengue.

Treatment for Dengue is Symptomatic. This means the symptoms shown by the infected person are treated, suppose high body temperature is observed in the person which is one of the symptoms of dengue fever, then antipyretics are given to that person to reduce the body temperature so that it becomes normal.

Similarly, fluids are given to maintain the electrolyte levels and to prevent its depletion. If other symptoms are observed in the infected person, then those symptoms will be treated with medications.
